Classroom Teacher ideas: 
Before reading novel- Use the KWL strategy
Read the synopsis on the back of the book. Then ask students the following questions:
What do you know about the folkloric Llorona and how does she compare or contrast to the anglo version of the boogeyman?
There are varying theories about her origin. How did she become legendary?
The synopsis also mentions the Aztec civilization. What do you know about this supreme culture?
 What connection do you suppose the author made with the Aztecs and the Llorona?

During the reading of the novel- Create literature circles for discussion in groups of 4-5 and assign one student the following role, alternating roles each chapter. (When I was a school teacher, I always had my students keep a spiral notebook as journal evidence that he/she did her assignment. Sometimes I passed out seperate blank sheets describing each role at the top and that's what they would turn in to me for evaluation.)
Summarizer- This student summarizes the chapter for the whole group.
Questioner- This student is responsible for creating questions for discussion. They may be questions he/she had that confused the reader and were jotted down for clarification with the group.
Illustrator- This student illustrates the chapter with drawings, computer clip art, or magazine cut-outs.
Researcher- This student is responsible for bringing supplemental information regarding anything that caught his/her interest during the reading of the chapter.
Word Wizard- This student is responsible for finding 5-8 vocabulary words in the chapter that he/she had to look up in the dictionary and define each one. Sometimes the illustrator can also be the word wizard if you want to keep the group smaller.

Language Seeker- This role is used for a more advanced group who has a clear understanding of figurative langauge. This student looks for sentences with metaphors, similes, personification, hyperboles, alliteration, etc.
